A removal is not finished while a stump is still sitting in the lawn. Stumps catch mower decks, sprout suckers for years, hold water, and slowly turn into a soft spot in the yard. Grinding takes the whole thing below grade in one visit, along with the surface roots that run out from it.
We grind stumps we removed and stumps somebody else left behind. Old hardwood stumps in a front lawn, pine stumps along a fence line, and rows of stumps left after a lot was cleared all get the same treatment. Depth depends on what you want to do with the spot. Grass needs a few inches below grade with clean fill. A new tree, a post, or a patio needs more, so tell us the plan and we will grind to suit it.
Grinding on a mountain lot takes a little more care than grinding on flat ground. We check the slope and the access before quoting, because a stump behind a fence or up a bank changes what machine can reach it. We also look for meters, irrigation, drain lines and buried utilities near the stump, since a grinder does not know the difference between a root and a pipe.

Check access and utilities
We confirm the machine can reach the stump, then look for meters, lines, sprinkler heads and anything buried near the cut.
- Step 2
Grind it down
The cutter wheel works the stump and the flare down past grade, then follows the surface roots that would show through a lawn.
- Step 3
Backfill and clean
Grindings go back in and get tamped, or they leave with us. The area gets raked and blown clean so you can seed it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How deep do you grind?
Standard is several inches below grade, enough to mow over and seed. If you are planting a new tree, setting a post, or pouring anything, tell us and we grind deeper.
What happens to the grindings?
By default we rake them back into the hole and tamp them, because the hole settles otherwise. If you want the spot clean for topsoil and sod, we can haul the grindings off.
Can I plant grass or a new tree right away?
Grass yes, once you top the spot with soil. A new tree in the same hole is harder, because leftover chips tie up nitrogen as they break down. It is usually better to plant a few feet away or replace the fill.
