Pruning is the cheaper half of tree care, and it is the part most yards around here skip. A mature oak with twenty years of deadwood in it will throw limbs in the first hard wind. We prune to a plan, not by the hour. Deadwood comes out, rubbing and crossing limbs get cleaned up, and clearance gets cut over the roof, the driveway and the service drop. On a big spreading canopy we thin selectively so wind moves through the crown instead of pushing on it like a sail. We do not top healthy trees. Topping a tree buys one season and creates weak regrowth that becomes a removal later.

Timing matters less than most people think, but a few things help. Heavy structural work reads better on a bare tree in winter. Storm-damaged limbs get cleaned up whenever they happen, because a torn limb is an open wound and a hazard at the same time.
